Jurassic Park was an amusement park created by InGen, a company founded by Hammond, to recreate dinosaurs and use them as public attractions. Hammond wanted the park to be operated by a small staff to save money and increase efficiency. To make it work, he designed almost the entire park to be controlled by a supercomputer that would handle all of the park's functions. The computer, however, had several bugs that led to the disastrous result of releasing the dinosaurs. This novel was written during the information age, when the world was becoming interested in the use of computers and other technological devices and advances. Michael Crichton wrote his novel Jurassic Park as a response to the information age of the 1980s. Like Crichton's novel, the 1980s were immersed in a world of advanced technology. Genetic engineering has had a growth in technological advancements. Hammond discovered a way to clone dinosaurs by extracting DNA from fossilized mosquitoes. Since the 1980s, genetic engineering has been used to produce everything from more environmentally friendly lithium-ion batteries to infection-resistant crops (Melina). Similar to discoveries made in the 1980s, Hammond was able to make a great discovery about how to bring extinct creatures back into the world. Both of these discoveries were part of the many technological advances that occurred during the 1980s period, whether it was entertaining or improving the environment. Furthermore, supercomputers were used for advanced scientific applications that were too complicated for the human brain. Dr. Wu, the park's chief geneticist, used a supercomputer to replicate dinosaur DNA. The first Cray-1™ system was installed at Los Alamos National Laborat... middle of paper... with no possibility of malfunction. This danger, resulting from over-reliance on technology, was what Michael Crichton was conveying and warning about in Jurassic Park. In the novel Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton responded to the 1980s and issued a warning to a society that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. The information age has been bombarded with technological advances. Jurassic Park was driven mostly by technology, but it didn't work within a 24-hour period. Society should be more aware of the disastrous consequences of technology and reduce dependence on it. Changes should be made to reduce this dependency, although it will be difficult. Small things like reducing the time spent using communication devices or freeing a room from technology can contribute to society if everyone works together to calm the rapid growth of technology.
