Surrogacy is something that not many people actually support, even though “it is one of many reproductive techniques that have enabled infertile couples to have children” (qtd. in Freedman). There are two types of surrogacy, traditional and gestational. The traditional type of surrogacy involves the surrogate mother being (AI) artificially inseminated with the intended father's sperm or with donor sperm when the sperm count is low. In both cases, the surrogate mother's egg will be used. Genetically the surrogate mother becomes the mother of the resulting child (Storey). Although there are two different types of surrogacy, a traditional surrogacy is rarely seen or performed. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate mother has no genetic ties to the offspring. Eggs and sperm are extracted from donors and fertilized in vitro and implanted into the uterus of the surrogate mother (Storey). A surrogate mother carries and delivers the baby for the couple, after being paid to do so – it is unheard of to see someone do this voluntarily. People see this type of technique as irrational because they believe that the woman is giving away “her” child without it being genetically hers. Interestingly, most individuals who oppose this are actually not even against adoption; these couples who pay for a woman to carry their child actually have a biological relationship with that child. Surrogacy should not be banned, but it should be regulated by law because these people are giving star-crossed couples a chance to bring life into the world. If everyday partners have the right to have a child, what makes others different who are unable to do so naturally?
