Document No. 1 A Citizen's Perspective1. The citizen was furious that innocent Americans aboard the British passenger liner had been killed by an unannounced torpedo attack. After this tragedy, the unknown individual expressed his anger in Perspective of a Citizen by stating, "I was outraged that most of the people on the U-boats were dead, sick, or injured on the Lusitania, when the U.S. States agreed to remain neutral” (4). During World War I, Germany introduced unrestricted submarine warfare to combat the British Navy. The United States had no reason to be associated with the European conflict fight for a long period of time. However, this would later change when Germany sank the Lusitania and made a new enemy. The sinking of the Lusitania would eventually lead to the United States becoming involved in the foreign war government, we decided to respond to the sinking by declaring war” (4). The shipwreck turned American public opinion against Germany at a time when nationalism and patriotism were growing. President Woodrow Wilson insisted he was protecting his country's people, but in reality no one was safe in the water. To stop the sinking the only option was to fight. The United States was getting tired of people dying to cut off trade. Document no. 2 Captain Walter Schwieger1. Captain Walter Schwieger wrote the account of the sinking of the Lusitania. Seeing the people on board the ship made him feel guilty, he could no longer carry out the attack. According to Walter Schwieger he could not launch a second torpedo against a group of people who were trying to escape and survive (4). Evidently it was something he didn't want to proceed with... middle of paper.......S. they strictly went to war because they couldn't avoid it. “The attack on the US ship may have been a helping factor, but we all know the reason they got involved is because the US can't keep itself out of the war” (9). It is known that America argues quite often because, it seems, everything that happens in the world is relevant to them. Over time it has been proven that the United States is attracted to war and loves to fight.2. This would lead to the United States being drawn into the war because it was attacked unjustly. Germany is adding insult to injury by essentially bashing them, saying they couldn't avoid war. “It would be ridiculous to say that the attack of a German submarine on an American ship was the main reason for the United States' involvement in the war” (9). This was their belief, they had the right to attack America and they would want to fight.
