Compare and contrast the attitudes of the GMD and the CCP towards the first united front. (1924-27)The first united front was an alliance between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, formed to counter Chinese warlords in 1924. The Kuomintang (later referred to as the GMD) is the Chinese nationalist party founded by Sun Yat -Sen in 1912 while the Chinese Communist Party (later referred to as the CPC) was founded in 1921. The alliance created a National Revolutionary Army for the Northern Expedition in 1926. In 1927, during the expedition, Chiang Kai-shek eliminated the communists ; and consequently the first united front ended. This article will compare and contrast the attitudes of the GMD and the CCP towards the first United Front. As part of the united front, the alliance's attitudes towards the Northern Expedition will be discussed. First, the GMD and the CCP were held together by their common enemy, the warlords. Both the GMD and the CCP were revolutionary parties that wanted to put an end to the warlords. For more than a decade, warlords ruled their territory throughout China and used military force to maintain their power. The ultimate goal of the alliance is to unify China; and they thought that the party could not defeat the warlords alone. To achieve this goal, the GMD and the CPC founded the National Revolutionary Army and the Northern Expedition in 1926. However, beneath the surface, self-interest belied it. The Chinese Communists wanted to gain support among urban workers, peasants, and students through numerical superiority in the GMD and the nationalist movement without provoking non-Communists. To achieve his goal, the GMD joined the CCP as an individual. As for the GMD's goal in the first united front, Sun Yat-sen, as the leader of the GMD, underestimated... mid-card... defeated. The GMD wanted to take control of communism while the CCP aimed to spread communism. These different ambitions of the two parties made it unstable and ultimately led to the collapse of the first united front. Both parties commonly had disagreements among party members. In the GMD, some members did not wish to cooperate with the new ally, while CCP members disagreed over joining the GMD and the timing of the Northern Expedition. In particular, the GMD went through major changes in attitude towards the CCP after the establishment of the first united front. The GMD was a divided left wing and a wing that contested the authority of CCP members in the party. Furthermore, after Sun Yat-sen's death, Chiang Kai-shek eventually betrayed the CCP in the Shanghai White Terror. Against the GMD, the CCP, however, was unwilling to seize the sign of terror and respond successfully.
