Pope John Paul II once said: “Faith and reason are like two wings with which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the heart of man the desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men too may reach the fullness of the truth about themselves." (Falliable Blogma) Based on this significant and powerful quote, it can be deduced that faith and reason are directly associated and related. It can also be implied that the combination of faith and reason allows one to seek information and knowledge about truth and God; Based on various classroom discussions and past academic teachings, it is understood that both faith and reason are the tools that different parties should use in this search for truth and God. There are many positions and views on the issues of faith and reason. Some believe that both of these ideas cannot and should not be combined; these parties believe that faith and reason should be considered simply as separate entities. However, the writer does not understand why both entities cannot be combined; both terms are so closely compatible that it would make sense to combine them for a common task. Based on various class discussions and readings, there are many philosophers and theologians who have certain opinions regarding faith, reason and their compatibility; these philosophers include Hildegard of Bingen, Ibn Rushd, Moses Maimonides, and St. Thomas Aquinas. The following essay will examine each of the philosopher's previously stated views on faith and reason, and will essentially attempt to determine whether or not faith and reason are one. Each philosopher discussed above is very different in his or... .. middle of paper ...... and reason. Ibn Rushd first used this logic to determine the existence of God. According to Chad Hillier, "The simple fact is that reason affirms divine unity, which, by definition, is a confession of the existence of God and the denial of any other deity". (Chad Hillier) Based on this quote, one can deduce that reason plays an important role in one's faith; Ibn Rushd clarified this by demonstrating the existence of God through rational thought and scientific explanation. He then used it to establish some attributes and characteristics of God and also focused on the origin of the world. Later in his life, the events in which Ibn Rushd was essentially involved led to a dramatic change in the world of religion and theology. It has had an overall positive impact on many world religions and has shown how religions could eventually evolve and transform into what we know them to be today.
