In India there are predominantly three genders used to express an individual: men, women and hijras. Hijras are neither men nor women, but can be considered neutral having an intertwined sexual orientation. Men who reach a certain age and want to live their lives as women can express themselves as hijras. If a hermaphrodite has an ineffective menstrual cycle she can also classify herself as a hijra. To get to the point of being a hijra and feeling emasculated, men would have to surgically remove their genitals.
