Topic > The Old Folks Home 'De-Humanizer' - 987

As we age, parts of us humans begin to deteriorate. For example, we may start to forget simple things like the names of family members. Our hair turns grey, we have more difficulty hearing, seeing, moving and even doing things that were previously easy in our daily lives. We are deprived of practically everything we were before and suddenly society no longer sees us as before. Even our families don't do that and when they finally decide that maybe it's a better idea to just put the elderly in a nursing home because that specific elderly person can no longer take care of themselves properly. Honestly this seems like an excuse to me because that family could easily take that family member into their own hands and take care of them themselves. In the past, there were no homes for the elderly and the elderly were actually cared for by the youngest member of the family, but we as a nation, even around the world, have moved away from that lifestyle. It's easier to let someone else take care of them so we don't have to worry anymore. It's definitely most likely not a very easy transition for that senior who has gone from being able to control every aspect of their life to having absolutely no control at all, which is wrong. They are in fact human beings just like the rest of us and should be able to enjoy personal rights such as the freedom to choose their own way of life. Elderly people in the US are forced into nursing homes by their families, it is wrong for them to be sent there, it strips away personal choice and dehumanizes them, there should be an alternative. To start now, no matter how old we are as human beings, we should all have personal choices and nursing homes deprive the elderly of any personal choices. These……middle of paper……would be like an old man's paradise! In conclusion, the choice to send the elderly to a hospice is simply wrong. It's unfair to them from the start and most of the time it's not even their personal choice. Stripped of every single personal choice they had before and everything they worked for all their lives has now never left them. Normal life is over and they are forced to spend the rest of their lives in an old, disgusting and smelly house. Instead of these and everything that's wrong with them, my two alternatives would be a very nice choice and it would be much nicer towards them, much more respectful. And they could really enjoy their time as seniors. So, to conclude this essay, I would like to put this question in your mind: How would you feel if everything you have right now was taken away from you for the rest of your life? The end.
