In 1996, Captain Derrick Robinson, Sergeant Delmar Simpson, and Sergeant Nathanael Beech were charged with suspected involvement in one of the largest sex scandals the United States Army had ever seen. According to CNN, rape and adultery charges were pending among these three men in a huge sexual misconduct case against female soldiers at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland (CNN, 2996). Following this incident, the United States military took it upon itself to open a telephone hotline to encourage the reporting of similar serious crimes. Furthermore, the increase in reporting has influenced extensive research to examine the prevalence of rape against female soldiers in the U.S. military (Titunik, 2000). This article will explore the dynamics of rape against female soldiers in the military and the research conducted on its prevalence. The Aberdeen Proving Ground sexual assault investigation was sparked by a series of complaints made by female trainees who reported assaults perpetrated by drill sergeants on the base. Women were no strangers to military service, however, this 1996 investigation was the beginning of a series of female complaints that brought attention to women's military service (Titunik, 2000). In 1991, the largest enlistment of female soldiers was recorded during the Persian War. This marked a dramatic increase in the number of women enlisting for military service. During the Persian War, Congress finally allowed women to serve in combat (Titunik, 2000). From the end of the draft in 1973 to 2003 military data, the number of women in the service increased from 2% to 12%. A sample of military women studied in 1991 showed that 69% had experienced sexual harassment... half of paper......Women in the U.S. Military: A Systematic Review of the Literature.
