“Currently, according to statistics from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 10 billion animals are killed for food every year, which is equivalent to... more of one million animals killed every year now…19,011 animals killed per minute…317 animals killed per second” (Sinilong). This is due to America's supply and demand for meat, dairy, and eggs and the creation of factory farms. There are many reasons to eat a vegan diet, one of which is the unnecessary cruelty that farmed animals endure for the sake of factory farming. A second point is to end American hunger, saving lives and money. Another reason to consider veganism is to improve the health of society through a humane diet. A constructive solution to the above problems, they all share a common remedy, veganism. “Veganism can be defined as a lifestyle that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practical, all forms of exploitation and cruelty towards animals. in the production of food, clothing or for any other purpose” (Why Vegan). The reasons why some Americans choose to consume animal products instead of living a vegan lifestyle are the habits and traditions associated with meat consumption, the conveniences or inconveniences of both diets; furthermore, the taste preference shared by most of American society. By investigating these reasons, we can examine diet and lifestyle; as well as animal rights and compassion. Habits of History Our ancestors were hunters, for centuries humans have hunted animals for their meat, skin and bones. According to biologists, it is not in the structure of the human anatomy to eat meat, and we have adapted, perhaps out of necessity. With no other options, homosapiens, forced to eat everything around them, may have decided to ... middle of paper ... nourish a "natural" and "normal" feeling in today's society. There will never be anything normal about any form of slavery, towards any living being, human or animal. Unless we take steps to change the meat industry and factory farming, animal slavery and suffering will continue. The solution to some of society's health problems, reducing famine and ending unnecessary animal suffering, is to eliminate or reduce the use of animal products. We can create a peaceful world, prosper and be healthy. Cruelty-free food options are available and provide what we need nutritionally and tastefully. Let's examine our commitment to compassion, as consumers and human beings. Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “From an early age I have abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men like me will regard the murder of animals as they now regard the murder of men.”..”
