Medicine in the Middle Ages was essential in a time when there were terrible diseases, limited resources and a lack of medical knowledge. Despite not having access to all the advanced technology, medical knowledge, and amazing resources we have today, they have managed to cure some illnesses and diseases. Doctors couldn't figure out what caused the illnesses. In the Middle Ages there was no access to antibiotics, which made it almost impossible to cure the most serious diseases. Medieval medicine was made up of herbs, spices and resins. It was applied in drinks, pills, rubs, baths, washes, ointments, purges and poultices. Headaches were treated with sweet-smelling herbs. Mixtures of henbane and hemlock were applied to painful joints. Coriander was used to reduce fever. Stomach pains were treated with wormwood, mint and balm. Lung diseases were treated with a medicine made from licorice and comfrey. Horehound cough syrups and drinks were used for colds, coughs, and chest congestion.
