Change. A word that scares our culture. People are afraid of change because they feel comfortable with tradition. Most people have been taught that tradition is something that cannot be revised; furthermore, people fear changing tradition. Lemony Snicket once said, “Just because something is traditional is no reason to make it, obviously.” Change in your life can be anything. With culture and society constantly progressing in many directions, more and more topics are being discussed and questioned. Religion plays a significant role in the constant controversy over traditional topics. Certain topics are debated because people start to think like Lemony Snicket: what is the reason for these traditions? Celibacy is defined as the state of not being married and/or abstaining sexually by choice, especially for religious reasons. It is shown as a vote for men to become Catholic priests. Over the years, there has been constant debate over whether priests should remain celibate or should be allowed to marry during their priesthood. In Catholicism, the Church believes that celibacy is a gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church; so it's not something negotiable. Many devout Catholics consider the idea of ending celibacy to be an absolutely ridiculous thought, but there are many devout Catholics who are of the opinion that ending celibacy in the priesthood could have a positive impact on Catholicism. The questions remain: What is the right choice? Do Catholics have the authority to change tradition? As a raised Catholic and from a personal perspective, I believe that celibacy in the priesthood is beneficial and that its tradition is quite beautiful. Not only should Catholicism continue with its tradition because it is its… medium of paper… other. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (Jn 13:34-35). Celibacy is an art, something that must be practiced continuously. A husband or wife does not learn how to be a good spouse on their wedding day. Likewise, a priest does not learn what it means to be a good priest on the day of his ordination. Being successful comes with growth. Each of us thrives in a hermeneutic experience; the priest can achieve this goal mostly through celibacy. A priest takes a vow of chastity to give himself to God and make him available to love and help as many people as possible, just like Jesus did. Jesus only existed for 33 years. Priests must be those who continue his teachings and share his gift. The gift of celibacy that priests receive can truly bring them closer to God and further help people in the community learn to be closer to God.
