One of the greatest poets to ever walk the Earth, he produced one of the most mind-blowing arguments ever to emerge in humanity, and Mr. McGee is very fond of it his name is also William Butler Yeats. Why do some things stay the same and others change? In the literature book, many stories and poems are by Yeats which describe this very fact. That in life there are things that will remain the same forever and some things that will change for better or for worse. Have you ever thought about it: what drives us to do the things we do? Is there something that makes us change? Yeats writes 5 poems that speak specifically to this topic; When You're Old, The Isle of Lake Innisfree, The Wild Swan at Coole, The Second Coming and Sailing to Byzantium. For starters, one of the best short poems Yeats ever wrote is called When You Are Old. We live in a world where we watch people become who they are, and in a world where we watch people fade from society. What the poem is about is that when he watched people age, he saw many physical and mental disadvantages. But at the same time he saw something he didn't expect, he saw some things for the elderly that would never change. The things that change were physically invented. They look older with wrinkles and never get enough sleep because you suffer from years of wear and tear. Yeats says there will be some things you will never forget, regardless of age. “But a man loved the pilgrim soul in you and loved the sorrows of your changing countenance” (pg. 1140, lines 7-8). Basically what this line means is that love is one of those things that will never change. When you're older, there's one thing you can still do, and that's dream. No matter what age you can still have them... middle of paper... 147, line 1-3) This poem has a lot to do with age. There is no trick to looking young and staying the same age forever. This is a huge thing that changes all the time, every day, every year, as you get older. You change your appearance almost every day. But what remains the same are the things you believe. This should never change substantially. In conclusion, there are five really important poems written by William Butler Yeats which are contained in the literature book. They have a very interesting topic that can be discussed forever. This is the difference between staying the same and changing. I have discussed each of each story in my essay. These five stories are; When You Are Old, The Isle of Lake Innisfree, The Whooper Swan at Coole, The Second Coming and Sailing to Byzantium. Everyone owns others doesn't, but at the same time they also have the same things.
