Introduction: Some people make pottery for a living. They will make bowls, plates, home decor and many other ceramic items. Other people make pottery for fun. Make a shape, make a mess and just do it to relieve stress. Some may think it's easy, but there's more to it than meets the eye. Ceramics can be a challenge for many, for some people it can flow naturally. Pottery requires skill, patience and also involves many steps. That's why it's so fun. This manual will guide you to build a clay pot with clay coils. Materials and Tools Needed: To successfully complete a handmade spiral vase you will need the following items to demonstrate this project. Most is needed, brush is recommended. • Sketchbook • Pencil • Cardstock • Razor blade utility knife • Ruler • 3 lbs. of stoneware cone 6 clay• Steel flat smoothing tool• 1 cup of water• Cutlery container• Oven or oven• Rolling pin• Needle tool• Mathematical compass• Soft stone• Vegetable oil• Blender• Brush*• Toilet paper• Jar of tinProcedure:There are about 3 steps to make a spiral container. There are 16 steps in total. • Preparatory process • Creating the vase • Finishing the vase Diagram: Preparatory process In the preparation process you will start by drawing the vase shapes on paper (up to ten). You will then choose a shape and draw the chosen one on cardboard. Then you will simply cut the shape. Making the Pot Process While making the pot process, you will be rolling out the clay. You will cut the shape of the bottom (depending on the shape of the vase). Then you will roll the clay to form coils. Then proceed to overlap the coils according to the shape of the vase you have chosen. Place the dough in... the center of the paper... figure 10.3. Once the final polishing step is complete, you will wrap the vase in two layers of toilet paper; toilet paper is used to ignite the carbon which turns the clay pot dark black. Then, when it's ready, place it in the included tin can.4. You will place the tin can in the oven between 572⁰ and 1470⁰F for a total of 15-17 hours.5. Once your piece is finished, you can use it as a decoration or as a trophy to show that you completed your first pottery lesson. Conclusion: To be successful in pottery making you need to focus on your task and have enough patience. You will have to pay attention to your hands. You'll make a mistake a couple of times here and there, but to move on to the next step you need to learn from that mistake. When you finish this challenge you will feel great and very accomplished.
