In Greek two words: Kratos means (government) and demos means (people). Heywood (2013, p.89). The concept of democracy cannot be understood precisely. One of the most political concepts that has no definition. As Bernard Crick argues, democracy is a term that can mean different things to different people. It is often expressed in terms of "thin" and "thick". In its subtlest incarnation, democracy is synonymous with popular sovereignty or majority rule. In some forms, democracy can be implemented directly by the people; mainly in large metropolises and is the work of the people through their elected representatives. Also known as direct and indirect democracy. According to President Abraham Lincoln, democracy is “that government of the people, by the people, for the people.” It also stands out in other forms such as governance based on the rule of law and the protection of civil liberties (often). This article will analyze and illustrate the video clip “Why Democracy Matters.” First we will discuss and argue why democracy has become a prevalent term in Western countries. Secondly, it will outline how the concept is interpreted, i.e. the positive aspect and the negative aspect. Third, the article will examine the essay beyond some contrasts and explore alternative views on democracy.
