A funny thing happened on the way to the theater September 5, 2000: First Audition Less than a week ago, I had never auditioned for anything. Tonight I was on stage with about forty actors, most of whom had several plays under their belt. Since I had neither a major nor past plays to support me, I was nervous. I still survived it all and had fun despite the scary judging process. September 7, 2000: Callbacks The hyper-talkative freshman in my French class looked at the callback list before I had the chance. He wouldn't tell me if my name was on it, he just wanted to complain that his wasn't. After our classes were over, Kaitlin and I checked the list and were both called back for both possible representations. (yes!) The second round of auditions started at 7pm, so I just had time to get there after the standard Thursday night wine tasting. My sister said it would bring me good luck: "Any day I would choose a cute pink-cheeked girl over a normal girl!" September 8, 2000: Cast List I'm in a comedy! Yes for me! Yes for me! I'm acting in a play and I've never been in one before! I have a character name and everything. I am Myrrhine in Plautus' Roman farce "A funny thing happened on the way to the wedding." My character is a drunk. Maybe those pink cheeks gave me the edge I needed. Rehearsals begin on Monday, preliminary costume fittings today after work. Oh my God. September 11, 2000: First TestI was the first to arrive; The Askanase auditorium was dark when I timidly stepped onto the stage. A conference table was surrounded by about 20 chairs guarding the periphery. My role before this point was that of an audience member; Tonight I entered a new world. Under the harsh glare of the task lights, the seats in the auditorium were barely visible. I took a seat in the center of the table, not wanting to be too close to either end. I faced the door so I could see the others as they entered. Many of the cast members knew each other, I only know them as staples of the NDSU theater community. The group dynamic is a little intimidating; Tonight I hardly spoke at all.
