Early films of Hindi cinema dealt with mythological stories based on the epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, family melodramas depicting the domestic and social obstacles of Indian society, and costume dramas that included events historical themes concerning stories of saints and princes. The first Indian sound film "Alam Ara" was produced in 1931 by Adershir Irani. The film was based on "a costume drama full of fantasy and with many melodious songs to heighten the audience's emotions." In other words, Irani conveyed the social issues of Indian society through harmonies which were usually disseminated and performed through folklore and plays. The film was successful as it attracted much more audiences to see the film than stage plays and shows. This film set the stage for other directors to follow the pattern of producing films with songs and emphasizing themes such as mythological, melodrama, action, political and historical topics from then on with the addition of music. However, most previous films contained narratives that required male actors to have the lead roles and women were given subordinate or domestic-dominant roles. Therefore, since women in Hindi cinema have been structured to play roles in the private sphere, things that include taking responsibility for their families, raising children, defending their family and social rights, and advocating for their neighbors and members of communities who reflect the norms. of the goddess of Indian tradition, however, in later films from the 1970s onwards women were portrayed as sexual objects.
