1. Describe the context of the incident. Since the beginning of the second week of school, an incident occurred that made me worried, worried, and confused about a specific student. This student was prevented by his parents from doing a number of different things typical of the school day. The students' parents refused to sign a consent form for the student to participate in "Summit," which is the primary source of the school's fifth-grade curriculum. Since the rest of the class signed the form and the summit is a necessary part of the fifth grade curriculum, a meeting was scheduled. Even after having a meeting with my cooperating teacher, the principal and the social worker (who could also translate) to explain the matter further and explain what the summit is and its benefits, they refused. They will have it reviewed by a family advocate and a lawyer before signing. They are concerned about privacy, but summit results are only shared with the classroom teacher, and the summit website used anonymous information to learn about students taking assessments and using references. The only other option for the father, if he does not sign the document, is to have the student change schools. In addition to the father's refusal to sign the summit form and allow the student to participate in a fifth grade core, the father also pushes for his son to have an IEP. After looking at test scores and watching the student interact with other students, it is clear that he does not need them. The student is an English language learner but is proficient in reading and writing and receives ELL services twice a week. The family also refuses to let him go out during recess, ...... middle of paper ......g to see that the student must stay indoors during recess and lessons which we often conduct outdoors, due to the unnecessary restrictions placed on him. The student is missing out on valuable opportunities for his or her developmental level, including interaction with peers. He gets left out of things like gym class and daily recess when we go out. It would be unfair to other students to stay indoors during recess every day, as it is important for them to have the chance to get fresh air and run around a bit to break up the day. The co-teachers in the room I am in, as well as the other teachers who have had this student, all feel the same way about this issue and the ongoing incident. We all recognized that this student is an exceptional and academically strong child, yet the father is convinced that his son needs an IEP and cannot use the Summit platform.
