IntroductionThe history of the dance is unknown. Furthermore, its origin is not limited to any region or culture. Similar to music, dance is a language shared by all nations, cultures and regions. Due to cultural diversity, dance has hundreds of different types. Among the different types of dances, stylistic movements and taps, Dabke is one of the most traditional. Dabke is basically a Middle Eastern dance and is commonly considered to be an Arabic dance. It is assumed that this type of dance was performed mainly by the inhabitants of the populations living in the mountains towards the Mediterranean coast and the Tigris River (Lebanese World Cultural Union, online). It is currently practiced in many Arab countries and pronounced as dabke commonly along with "dabka", "dabki", "dabkeh", "debke", "debkah", "debki" in other regions and cultures (Kaschl, 2003). Among Arab countries, it is mainly performed in Palestine and Lebanon. In these countries, Dabke is usually performed in joyful ceremonies, moments of happiness, weddings and celebrations. In the Western world, Dabke is called “line dancing”. In this article I will talk about “Dabke” – Palestinian folk dance. We will learn about its history and what makes it important as well as unique. Our attention will focus on the places where it is usually performed and the performers, the costumes worn by the performers, the symbolism in the movements, the music and songs played during the performance. I will also present our personal experience regarding Dabke and how it can be preserved in the near future. History: Studies reveal that Dabke has possible origins from Canaanites or Phoenicians (Kaschl, 2003). The Canaanite region includes the modern regions of Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon.
