The human race has a relentless obsession with making sizable profits, to the point of ignoring all rational thought. At the heart of every decision, the motive is almost always greed. Throughout history, we have driven countless species, such as Atlantic salmon and Atlantic cod, to extinction for the sake of commercial profits. With this profit-driven logic, it's fair to say that as long as you want to make a profit, who cares whether a species goes extinct or not? There is no profit to be made once the species no longer exists (Vaillant, page 44). This is often the mentality of a young child. The baby wants the bottle, so he will continue to cry until he calms down, no matter what happens around him. One hopes that civilization is more advanced and sophisticated than this. Instead of waiting for a species to recover from exhaustion, humanity takes until it can bear no more.
