They still don't understand what Jesus means when he tells them he is leaving. His whole battle speech seems to have been somewhat pointless because none of the disciples were able to actually do what Jesus asked. Even after the resurrection of Jesus, the disciples were all hiding in a house days after his resurrection. This does not appear to represent a lack of fear of death, but rather a great deal of fear. This inability to understand what Jesus taught may have some other meaning. The farewell discourse is not addressed exclusively to the disciples, but is also addressed to us and serves as a guide on how we should act.
