Topic > The characteristics of masculinity and virility

“Masculinity is not the manifestation of an inner essence; it is socially constructed. Manliness does not emerge into consciousness from our biological composition; it is created in culture. Manliness means different things at different times to different people” (Kimmel,81). Not all males are credited with virility. Some members of the LGBTQI community are considered too feminine or not manly enough to have a manhood. Masculinity is an attribute expected of men. Bringing home the bacon, being intellectual, being fit, fairytale and generally a Neanderthal, being a player or a womanizer are some characteristics of masculinity. "Marketplace Masculinity describes the normative definition of American masculinity. It describes its characteristics of aggression, competition, anxiety..." (Kimmel,84). Some gay men are often called queens or are seen as women due to their sexual orientation and attraction to men. Being attracted to men makes gay and bisexual men attracted to men makes gay men seen as feminine, which in turn is that thing in our patriarchal society. Men often call other men derogatory feminine terms such as pussy, bitch, hoe etc. with an attitude inferior to that of men. “Historically and evolutionarily, masculinity has been defined as the escape from women, the repudiation of femininity” (Kimmel, 85). Because members of the LGBTQI community are believed to have a connection to feminine ways, they are not seen as masculine, thus they are incorporated into American culture.
