BLISS (1918)The story "Bliss" was written by Katherine Mansfield and was first published in August 1918 in the "English Review". The story was then reprinted as Bliss and Other Stories. The protagonist of the story "Bliss" is Bertha Young who lives in Hampstead, London. In the story, Bertha is a thirty-year-old woman, who seems so innocent and has pure feelings towards the people around her. She is also described as a happy soul who feels so blissful and childlike. There comes a day when Bertha has organized a dinner for the people close to her and her husband Harry. The main character with her husband in the story is considered to be an upper class society with the presence of servants in the setting of the story. The other characters in the story are Harry, her husband, Pearl Fulton, Bertha's best friend, the Norman Knight couple, the dinner guests followed by Eddie. There are also characters who played a minimal role in the story: Mary, the servant, the nurse, Little B's nanny and also Little B or Little Bertha, Bertha and Harry's daughter. Her husband Harry is a character who is characterized through Bertha's eyes and she eventually realizes that her husband's personality does not match her thoughts towards him. The image reflected by Harry, her husband, was completely unexpected and made her question the life she had had to face after knowing the relationship between him and her best friend. The dinner guests, Mr. Norman Knight as a playwright and Mrs. Norman Knight as an interior designer are close friends of the couple and known as "Cup" and "Face" to the family followed by Eddie who is an effeminate as well as a poet with ...... middle of paper ......hey and listen to what they said and the salient point here is to accept man made things whether they are wrong or right. In conclusion, woman in the early 20th century was criticized and held back from expressing the desire for their sexuality and freedom to do what they want. The setting of a house with a garden which symbolizes the luxury and happiness Bertha has is described throughout the story. Bliss' story is that although she is a woman, don't underestimate her ability to do jobs and things that could be better than men do. Women's rights should be protected and esteem should be given to the woman who creates the world. Also, the woman, especially the married one, should not stop here in fulfilling her dreams and desires just because you are married to someone, it does not mean that you cannot achieve anything in your life.
