Topic > Persuasive Essay on Gun Control - 1150

PresentCurrent progress is at an atrocious stalemate due to lack of actual knowledge on the issue and blind anger towards opposing sides. People must stop taking information for granted and accepting lies from biased groups, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), whose “most effective fundraising strategy has been to threaten gun owners that the government would come to take their guns… [NRA] was fearful that its fundraising machines might crash if the Supreme Court found that the Second Amendment guaranteed an individual's right to own guns (Winkler 7). Before even trying to approach solutions, people first need to understand how to clearly put gun control issues into perspective. Bowman introduces this topic with a key fact: “Guns are lethal weapons that can be used to commit violent acts. However, guns are not the source of the troubling violence in our society; Firearms are simply tools that function as intended by gun owners. Therefore, any reduction in gun violence must come from a meaningful discussion about reforming gun culture and the glorification of violence in America. The problem is not with guns, but with people who use them irresponsibly” (Bowman) The first mistake people make is blaming the actual object of the crime; they believe that the gun itself is evil, bringing only death. Yes, firearms are intended to kill, but what must be recognized is that killing is not necessarily bad; the killing can be done to kill or to defend. While criminals use weapons and kill with malicious intent, soldiers kill to stop abusers to defend the innocent. Simply confiscating all guns would do neither irresponsible nor responsible people any good. It's simply... middle of paper... The company responsible, TrackingPoint Solutions, was born just a year ago with the aim of revolutionizing hunting and sport shooting, but has obviously attracted much more attention. Many people debate the ethical purpose of this new technology, worrying about the negative effects of the product and also the new dangers it creates. With the TrackingPoint system, a person with no experience with firearms can learn to hit difficult targets in minutes. Critics fear this new capability will give rise to a whole new generation of mass shootings with the potential to increase casualty and lethality rates. Factors like expense, regulation, and rate of fire act as safety barriers against abusive users, but the mere existence of this capability adds to the enormous plate of gun control problems (“Long Shot: Inside the Scope of Smart Weapons”).
