Topic > Civil Disobedience, by Henry David Thoreau and Letter...

The essays "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau and "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King, Jr., incorporate the authors' opinions of justice. Each author effectively shows their main point; Thoreau is concerned with justice in relation to government and calls for: “not at once no government, but at once a better government” (paragraph 3). King believed that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (para. 4). Each essay shows a valid argument for justice, but King's philosophy is more effective because he has more logical points of view. King's letter from a Birmingham jail was an act of encouragement to protest against white traditions where they were unjust. King, a leader of civil rights groups, was opposed to mainstream views; King encouraged protest against tradition and established laws that are unjust, “Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at that time, I would have helped and comforted my Jewish brothers. If today I lived in a communist country where some principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I would openly advocate disobedience to the anti-religious laws of that country." (Paragraph 22) the part of that paragraph is significant because in Hitler's Germany, in a communist country or in any situation where injustices occur. King was against traditional views and unjust laws, which were against his fellow men and against Martin Luther King Jr. himself. It incorporates the zeitgeist which is a word that symbolizes the spirit of the era. Compare political freedom with its black brothers in Africa and with its brown and yellow brothers in Asia, South America and the Caribbean. The Negro of the United States is more eventful... in the center of the card ... compared to "Civil Disobedience" because its persuasive techniques have more logical points of view. Using logic people can relate to the king's opinions from a more personal point of view. Thoreau's point of view is harder to understand, but he shows very good arguments, because Thoreau uses antithesis and his rule is wrong and the virtuous man is right. Thoreau also has his own moral views and believes that government should follow man because government is “We the people”. Thoreau's abstract writing style would have caused most people in the 20th century era to find difficulty in interpreting his paradoxical writing. On the other hand, King's philosophy uses many similes, metaphors, and other points of view of blacks. Everyone works in harmony to stand together and unite as one great group led by Civil Wright leaders with a united message to change the future of all humanity.
