According to current data, depending on the source used, the United States is often considered a capitalist economy, but is actually a “mixed economy” fueled by consumerism. In the daily confusion, society senses consumerism and its manipulative control over consumers. Consumerism is a form of government control that causes society to form an almost uncontrollable purchasing habit, especially during the holiday season. Holidays, once spent with family for praise and thanks, are now replaced by a strong desire to rush to a sensational sale to buy useless things. The company allows the government to divide families during the holidays with the lure of incredible sales. Author Matt Walsh wrote an in-depth online article on the Huffington Post titled "If You Shop on Thanksgiving, You're Part of the Problem." In his article he also shows a strong concern about society's scandalous spending habits during the holiday season and how the government fuels the shopping frenzy. Matt Walsh even goes so far as to say, “Why give thanks for what you have when there is so much you don't have? This is the new meaning of Thanksgiving: Count your blessings, then buy some more, and count them again” (Walsh. Web). Society has the strength in numbers to help stop government from its money-driven ways that play a role in growing families apart. Society must be rehabilitated and give up this purchasing habit, return to traditional family values and not allow the government to rape the family unit through intelligent economic brainwashing. Our government has a strong motivation to subtly manipulate its citizens economically by changing interest rates. When interest rates... in the middle of the paper... the economy could improve. Bottom line, the government has us by the balls where it hurts the most, our money. The government can completely control society by pulling the strings on interest rates. However, we cannot afford to allow our government to commercialize social holidays at the price of dividing the family unit. Civilization dates back long before the words economy and government shutdown were used in everyday kitchen talk. Society, in this country, can afford the luxury of maintaining its political position without being affected. When a society is united it has more power than most governments. Now is the time for Americans to unite their families and use traditional family values and prevent family vacations from becoming just a corporate marketing ploy. Works cited Walsh, Matt.
