Its beginnings were found in the late 80's and early 90's, groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic Five introduced original lyrics and they also had samples of other genres of music such as rock, in their music. The groups seemed influenced, but above all they had the feeling of cute kids who could experiment with alternatives to boredom. Although, if we go back far enough, to the old Old School, we see artists like Rammellzee, who push the boundaries. Most of these groups didn't go mainstream, but artists like Outkast and Kanye West blurred musical genres and brought their style of alternative rap to a mainstream audience. This style of music was influenced by hardcore rap and was called Gangsta Rap, which started in the late 1980s. Gangsta rap had a restless/loud sound that wasn't as appreciated in some communities. Most, if not all, of this music was simply about being direct and to the point about everything. Sometimes the lyrics used were a true representation of what their life was really like, but they just sounded rude and offensive. Other times they told a comic book-like story.
