Portugal took the lead in exploring the Atlantic thanks to reconquest by the Muslims, good finances, and their long-standing seafaring traditions. In the field of agriculture, the Portuguese discovered Brazil by accident, but they focused on the Far East and used Brazil as a crime ground. Pernambuco, the first area to be colonized, became the world's largest sugar producer in 1550. Pernambuco was a land of plantations and Indian slaves. As the market for sugar grew, so did the need for slaves. Therefore the initiation of African slaves became very effective. Around 1511 Africans began working as slaves in the Americas. In 1492 Columbus undertook his voyage from Spain to the Americas. The Euro... in the center of the card... Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire.
