Parental Consent for Teen Abortions In the decades since Roe v. Wade, abortion still remains a controversial topic. Three in ten underage girls are said to get pregnant before the age of 20, which is nearly 750,000 pregnancies per year, which translates to 35% of pregnant teens miscarrying. Many teenagers who cannot confide in an adult choose to take the path of abortion. In 1981, eight years after the legalization of abortion, the Minnesota Parental Notification law was passed which takes away the right to abortion from minors and requires both parents to be informed within 48 hours before the medical procedure is performed. However, professional opinions believe that laws on notification of parental consent by minors can become significantly dangerous to a woman's health. Studies show that the effect of parental consent laws remains unknown because minors can travel to states where the law is not in effect and undergo an abortion. Although it decreased the number of abortions for some time, it also decreased the birth rate. To examine a minor's abortion rights, this article will focus on the insignificance of parental consent laws for adolescent abortions. Roe v. Wade gave women the right to abortion in 1973. This caused the country to split into two camps: pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life are for people who believe that a mother figure has no right to take the life of her child under any circumstances. Pro-choice are for people who believe that it is solely the mother's decision whether or not she wants to keep or abort her unborn child. It was clear that the government supported a woman's right to abortion with the Roe v. Wade verdict. And... half of the paper... the life of a little girl. This demonstrates why, in some cases, abortion at a young age is a necessity for success in high school, college, and in life. For pro-life people, the idea of abortion makes a young woman selfish and murderous. However, “According to Hurthouse, for some women, the decision to have an abortion does not manifest bad character: (Manninen 114) • Women who abort due to poor physical health • Women who abort out of fear for their life or related health issues to pregnancy impairments • Women who abort because they honestly do not believe they are ready to be a mother and because they feel they cannot provide for the resulting child • Women who abort because pregnancy and raising children would interfere with other intrinsically valuable activities The various reasons above are explanations as to why teenage mothers feel compelled to abort.
