There are smaller examples of racial/ethnic tension occurring globally, such as the numerous racial tensions in America with various racial and ethnic groups. These racial/ethnic tensions influence racial/ethnic identity formation, as discrimination and racism can lead to violent outcomes and influence how people choose to use their race or ethnicity as an identifying marker. However, these small instances of racial/ethnic tension have some similarities to the historical events of the novel. For example, there are many places in the world where there is a stigma against darker skin and light skin is essentially superior. There are also cases, much like the “perejil” pronunciation, where individuals are classified into racial categories based on accents or the pronunciation of certain words. To help combat these tensions, a revival of global and political forces is needed. The current system treats race as a scientifically proven separator of individuals and should instead see race for what it truly is, a socially constructed entity.
