Nerdy, geeky males who know a lot about computers and spend most of their time on the computer are the first type of person that the average individual thinks is in danger to become a computer addict. However, Internet addiction is estimated to affect at least 1 in 8 Americans. Internet addiction disorder (IAD), Internet addiction, and Internet compulsions are the same thing. According to the Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders, Internet addiction disorder refers to the problematic use of various aspects of its technology, such as electronic mail (email) and the world wide web. Internet addiction, also known as IAD, involves impulse control problems. There are different types of addictions involving things related to the Internet and computers. Some of the most common ones are online gambling and cyber relationships. Gaming, instant messaging, social networking, and blogging are all part of Internet addiction. However, there are other addictions that involve computer addiction and network compulsions. Computer addiction is represented by obsessive offline computer games such as Solitaire or Minesweeper, or by obsessive computer programming. Information overload is compulsive web surfing or database searching, which leads to lower work productivity and less social interaction with family and friends. Network compulsions include compulsive online gaming, stock trading, or compulsive use of online auction sites such as eBay, which often result in financial and work-related problems. As a person gets older, their likelihood of becoming addicted to the Internet decreases. For example, China and South Korea are among the countries with the highest rates of Internet addiction. In China and South Korea, 30% of citizens are employees. However, in America or… middle of paper… feels guilty about being online for any length of time or gets defensive when online. They socialize with friends and forget the importance of true friends. If a person is addicted to the Internet, he or she might have many other addictions, for example, alcohol or drugs might be one of them.
