Everyone believes our Founding Fathers were perfect. They always had the right answer and never made a mistake. What people don't know is that our Founding Fathers would never have written our Constitution if they hadn't made a mistake. The Constitution was actually the second written document that was intended to be the “supreme law of the land.” The first document created by our Founding Fathers was called the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were a good start for a young country, but not something the Founding Fathers wanted to base the country's future on. That's why writing the Constitution was the best decision our Founding Fathers ever made. The Articles of Confederation were approved on November 15, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. The Founding Fathers had decided that since the United States had just gained independence from a strong central government (England), they did not want to create another government like that. The Articles of Confederation placed much of the power in the hands of each individual state. There was no strong central government. Under the Articles of Confederation, the national government did not have the power to tax citizens for military reasons, draft citizens for the armed forces, or create a common monetary system. These were just a few of the many things that wronged the Articles of Confederation. For the time being, this didn't seem like a big deal to the citizens of the new country. The Founding Fathers, however, knew that something would have to change sooner or later for the United States to be successful in the future. The process of drafting the Constitution began on May 25, 1787. It was about ten years ago that the Articles of Confederation was... middle of paper... also had an amendment section where people had the right to change something in the document. This is what led to the ratification of the Constitution. If the Articles of Confederation had been strong enough for our country, our Founding Fathers would never have proposed the Constitution to the thirteen states. The Articles were a good start for our country, but the Constitution would be what held our country together for the future. The preamble to the Constitution reads: “We the people, to form a more perfect union…”. Nothing is perfect. Not even the Founding Fathers. They created a weak document in the Articles of Confederation. However, they corrected their mistake by not only writing the Constitution, but by convincing the states to ratify it. With these two documents the Founding Fathers transformed their biggest mistake into the best decision.
