Within Target Corporation there are many processes that take place every day. In this article I will focus on the replenishment business. The replenishment activity begins with the distribution center loading the truck. The distribution center does not load the truck in any particular order. All products marked to be sent to that specific store are loaded onto the truck. From here the truck heads to the point of sale where team members unload the truck box by box. No boxes are placed on a pallet or shrink-wrapped together. Then team members unload the boxes, and on each box there is a label indicating the section of the store where the items go. For example, a box might say A(1) 2-3-4, which means it goes to section A, corridor. The key quality characteristic in the definition phase is availability to consumers and customer service. When consumers go to a retail location, especially Target, they want items to be in stock and to receive great customer service. Everything in this process impacts out-of-stock and customer service. There is time wasted in this process, which is a waste of employee capital. 20-30 team members are needed from 4am to 8am to unload the truck and replenish the store, this depends on the size of the truck, which in turn depends on the sales volume of the store. The team members in the back, however, will spend about 4 hours longer scanning all the items that didn't make it onto the sales floor. This process could be improved by having the distribution center organize the truck before delivery. For example, they might load the truck by shop section, section A at the back of the truck, section B at the front, etc. This would save time at the retail level. Team members will only need to unload the truck onto pallets, not separate it during the journey. Another improvement that could be made is to develop a system that knows how many units of an item need to make it to the sales floor. This would improve safety stock scanning because the stocking team on the sales floor will no longer bring back items that don't fit on the shelves. This would save employees. The Target process should allow for the unloading of the delivery truck and storage of merchandise as efficiently and effectively as possible to ensure limited out-of-stocks and exceptional customer service. The critical process is loading the truck at the distribution center and storing the items on the sales floor at the stores. The following process map is the current one
