Art is a form of expression, which typically takes visual form; such as painting or sculpture. Usually depicted to convey a specific message or theme such as beauty or emotional power, art has many facets. Yee I-Lann uses art as a highlighter to expose issues that influence and help characterize his ideals on a personal level and to showcase socio-political frustrations. Yee I-Lann was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia in 1971 to a New Zealand mother and a Sino-Kadazan Malaysian father, who was a press secretary and wrote speeches for various prime ministers. His exposure to politics at such a young age planted a seed in his mind which later triggered his artistic manifestation of his political opinion. Yee I-Lann comes from a mixed heritage, which is primarily the root of all of her artistic work and the beginning of her exploration of identity. As a result of her privileged family background, I-Lann attended art school at the University of South Australia and specialized in the mixed discipline of photography and cinematography. At school he perfected his unique method of artistic creation. He began by photographing in dark painting rooms. These rooms were used to develop cinematography and develop photos using the darkroom process. As a result of this education, Yee I-Lann is a multidisciplinary woman who has explored numerous art forms throughout her life, including: painting, needlework, and embroidery, but her primary medium is photography. The mixed discipline is what allowed I-Lann to be exposed to contemporary practices such as digital manipulation. I-Lann not only devotes himself to photography, but also participates in the technological advancements of this art form. I-Lann considers tea a unifying habit in Asian culture because it is incorporated into everyday activities such as reading or entertaining family and friends. Taking the image of tea from the past is an example of how I-Lann uses historical references in her works to illustrate her perspective of Malaysia. Because of Yee I-Lann's use of historical references to make political comments through her artwork, she transformed from a young Sabahan girl into a renowned international artist. Her involvement with different artistic mediums has allowed her to showcase her opinions on current political issues or show her perspective on the culture of her homeland.
