Ethnomethodologist Harold Garfinkel wrote on the sociology of moral indignation and described degradation ceremonies as a cumulative work aimed at transforming an individual's identity into an inferior identity in the system of social types of the group. It seeks to remove people from their earned rights and limit their dignity in a community. Schwartz finds that social interactions are delineated by status assignments that focus on where we place people in our world. Questions that arise may include “are you good enough?” or “do you deserve to be one of us?” Degradation ceremonies in everyday life examine how we view people as intruders and how we deliberately or unconsciously assign a certain status to someone who doesn't believe in what we stand for
