Do individuals have free will or are our actions predetermined? Human beings are conscious human beings. By suggesting that individuals can choose different ways to respond to any situation, you are suggesting that free will is involved. However, science continues to evolve and reveal new answers about human nature. A major influence on human behavior has a lot to do with an individual's surroundings. Much of our being is believed to be the result of an individual's upbringing, education, culture, or ethnicity. Many of the events that individuals face are beyond their control. In the following article I will compare and contrast the three main philosophical viewpoints regarding the concepts of determinism, compatibilism, and libertarianism. I will also give strengths and weaknesses of each position. I will then come to a conclusion that I think is a correct answer. Moving forward, according to John Cowburn author of Free Will, Predestination and Determinism (2008), "determinism is the philosophical view that all human actions are predetermined and that every event an individual encounters can be explained. (p. 144) ” Therefore, every event that happens in one's life, happens as a result of previous events. According to this theory, if determinism is correct, based on each individual's past and previous experiences, there is only one possible future for that particular individual. There are two different types of determinism: hard determinism and soft determinism. Both types of determinism have the same principles; that every action that occurs in an individual's life is determined on a physical level and that all events in life are determined by events of the previous life. The hard determinist is the... middle of the paper... good or bad, it brought me to where I am today. And some decisions were because I was selfish. They were made based on what was best for me at the time I made the decision. Some of my decisions were based on my future. Individuals are unable to control what happened in their past or the laws of nature, but they are still able to make decisions that will lead to many different outcomes. In conclusion, do individuals have free will or are our actions predetermined? This is the question of many individuals and we will never know the answer. In this article I have compared and contrasted the three main philosophical viewpoints regarding the concepts of determinism, compatibilism and libertarianism. I also provided strengths and weaknesses of each position. I have come to a conclusion which I think is a correct answer.
