Society places an emphasis on individuality and being yourself when you grow up. However, as you grow up, you start to see a tendency to be part of groups that share the same ideas as you. This trend seems to be something that is natural for us. We enter groups with individual ideas but soon after our ideas become those of the groups. These group ideas begin to change our thought process about things, sometimes making them less and less original. It is because of this lack of originality that we hear the phrase thinking outside the box or doing something that has never been done. Although these phrases intrigue us, many times we tend to simply say or do what is expected or thought to be accepted. Even though everyone has their own individual identity, we still follow the thought process of that of a group or with the ideals of the group in mind. Acceptance is the key factor when groups come to mind because to have a group the members must accept or collaborate with the ideas of others in said group. As we grow up and travel the road of life we begin to venture out on our own paths towards people or groups who have the same thoughts as us. I agree with Lessing when I say that it is in our nature to do so. “The fact is that we all live our lives in groups: family, work groups, social, religious and political groups. Very few people are happy on their own, and they tend to be seen by their neighbors as strange, selfish, or worse. Most people can't stand being alone for long. They are always looking for groups to belong to, and if one group dissolves, they look for another. We are still group animals and there is nothing wrong with that.” (Lessing 334). As many other animals do, we humans usually act or... middle of paper... except that this is the way our writing for the assignment needs to be and we put those grouped ideas down to get back, yes hopefully, acceptance from the group or person reading it and getting a good grade. Since almost everything is constantly grouped, our understanding has been that of group learning. Group learning created the foundation for this very essay. However, whether outside the classroom or not, we tend to change our perception of not only our own thoughts but also our perception towards others in whatever group we want to be accepted into. This is why the saying finding a diamond in the rough is truly remarkable. Because it defines the diamond as an individual and the rough as a group. If someone is truly a diamond, they have been able to keep themselves away from any critical groupings and have truly been able to experience things and act on their own..
