Five seniors have started applying to college. One is black, one is Hispanic, one is Asian and two are white. They all apply to the University of Michigan, a prestigious school. All their letters arrive on the same day, while sweat pours down their faces and their hearts race. This is their best school and they worked hard to try to get in. They knew full well that it could be rejection or acceptance and that it could make their dreams come true or break them. They begin to open the letter and there it is. The word sorry is the first thing the two white students see. Tears streamed down their faces, not understanding how they could be rejected, especially since their SAT scores were around 2100. On the other hand, Black, Hispanic and Asian students saw the word acceptance instead. A smile broke out on their faces, knowing that they had worked hard for this opportunity. However, both black and Hispanic students scored a 1900 on the SAT, so how could they have been accepted? Does it have anything to do with race? The only way to find out is to delve deeper into affirmative action. Affirmative action is based on the representation of women and minority groups in the workplace or school. This idea was created to bring more diversity to America and try to control racism between different groups in the states. However, it has started to become a problem in the education system rather than the workplace. In college, the affirmative action law is used most of the time to accept students. Affirmative action is supposed to help minority students, especially African Americans, have a chance at a better education. Helps colleges decide who to admit to their school... halfway... he had graduated with honors, after changing friends and the confidence he needed to excel. (Blake) So, depending on the situation, this type of affirmative action may be better than the current one. Therefore, affirmative action in college admissions focuses on students' race and not their credentials. Affirmative action is something that gives advantages to minorities, including women, to get a better education or job. It is a system that brings more diversity to America and there have been cases where there have been problems with this type of system. On the other hand, there has been progress in increasing popularity with the idea of basing college enrollments on their class, rather than race; but for now this system will continue to exist and will only evolve into a new system that will ultimately benefit the majority of the American population.
