Topic > The American Dream and the American Dream - 1209

Millions of immigrants moved to America seeking freedom, equality, and success. This is known as the “American Dream”. A famous author named James Truslow Adams said, “Life should be better, richer, and fuller for all, with opportunities for each according to ability or achievement” (The Epic of America p.214-15). In other words, he believes that the American dream gives everyone the opportunity to reach a great place to be happy and successful; you can get there thanks to your skills and achievements as indicated above. The American Dream made immigrants believe that they had a chance to receive equal opportunities, but when they got here they realize that was a myth. While living in America they realize that they are limited in terms of education, voting rights and employment opportunities. To get great opportunities in USA you need to be educated. Most undocumented immigrants are very intelligent but unfortunately cannot afford to pay for college expenses because they are not eligible for financial aid. I believe that once you live in America for more than five years you should automatically become a citizen, because you start to learn the American way of life. Most immigrants contribute to our country, whether they clean the park or work in the factory, they help America function because the work that many Americans would not do, so I believe that Americans should give them the opportunity to receive financial help. In American, to move up in your social class you must achieve a college degree. For example today a person with a high school diploma is only qualified for a certain type of job such as Mc. Donald's, which you will only receive... in the middle of the paper... states: "Almost all the workers were teenage girls who spoke no English, working 12 hours a day, every day" ("The Triangle Factory"). They spent a lot of time working in a dirty and unsafe factory just to help their parents earn money. The question I constantly ask myself is who does the American Dream apply to? What I learn is that the American dream only applies to those who are rich and not to everyone. I was born in America and am currently attending college and I still don't feel like I have the chance to truly experience the true definition of the American dream. Bottom line, the American dream only applies to certain people. Those certain people are the rich and wealthy families. Education can help you move up in social class, but not everyone receives the opportunity to attend school. The American dream is a myth
