The change of generations“I Stand Here Ironing” and “Everything that arises must converge” are two different stories written at different times and by different authors, however , they have a lot in common. Both stories tell the problem of the relationship between children and their mothers. They are two stories that raise one of the most important social problems. Each reader can find a reflection of their own relationship in these stories. That's why these stories have been very popular among people for many years. Tillie Olsen's story “I Stand Here Ironing” is about the story of the formation of the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter Emily. The story takes the form of the mother's monologue, who reflects on the relationship with her daughter. For Emily the image of her mother will always be associated with ironing. One day Emily said to her: “Will you never finish ironing, mother? Whistler painted his mother in a rocking chair. I should paint mine while standing over an ironing board” (Olsen, 1913). Ironing has become the symbol of this story as an indicator of the difficult life of all mothers with many children. Emily was the eldest daughter of the family. When he was born, his mother was only nineteen. Of course, her mother had no experience in raising children, and no one around could teach her how to be a mother. Furthermore, when Emily was one year old, her father abandoned them. Therefore, Emily's mother had to leave her with a neighbor so that she could go to work and earn money for her daughter. Even though Emily was very young and didn't realize everything, it was the first turning point in the relationship between Emily and her mother. Emily's mother did, as she thought... middle of paper.. ....re about children's affectionate feelings towards their mothers. In “Everything that arises must converge,” the author talks about how annoyed Julian is by his mother's behavior and habits: “Everything that gave her pleasure was small and depressed him” (O'Connor, 1965). He believes his mother lives in the past and remains in his narrow field of vision. Julian does everything he can to prove the falsity of his mother's opinions and views. He is ready to marry a black woman to annoy his mother. However, his actions do not bring any results. Julian seems like a mischievous child who causes his mother's resentment. Emily doesn't have a rebellious nature like Julian. He is a calm and unsociable person, without friends. He does not show warm feelings towards any member of his family. He rarely communicates with his mother but does not reveal his feelings.
