Bourne suggests that the process of Americanization has taken a negative turn in America, as people are forced to adopt the culture, not integrate it into their own. Randolph S. Bourne criticizes the melting pot idea in favor of a cosmopolitan America. His criticism of attempts to assimilate immigrants into American culture demonstrates the fragile nature of immigrant beliefs in the face of Americanization. According to Bourne, “It is precisely this Anglo-American conservatism that is our chief obstacle to social progress” (Bourne 2/11). Bourne suggests that not everyone wants to be assimilated into American society. “Foreign cultures were not merged or brought together, transformed into a homogeneous Americanism, but remained distinct yet cooperating for greater glory” (Bourne 4/11). Bourne points out that America is destined to become a cosmopolitan mix of America. America is made up of immigrants and is destined to be a mixture of them
