Without evil what is good“If my devils should leave me, I fear my angels too will take flight.” Rainer Maria Rilke wrote this to explain the nature of humanity. He expressed his opinions on human behavior and how humans think. Without evil we don't know exactly what good is. Everyone possesses good and bad qualities. Because they are balanced and create stability in everyone. If the one did not exist, humans would not be able to differentiate or understand whether their actions are right or wrong. In our nature, life therefore always presents two sides of a situation, making us act and think as we do every day. At the beginning of the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a theme of society where boys begin to show order. Problems occur due to man's sinful nature in desperate conditions. Jack and his hunters illustrate the evil in human nature very well. The majority of the story consists of the battle between good and evil through symbolism. While Ralph represented the good of the boys, Jack symbolized the evil. Order is an important part of human behavior as it allows people to act according to rules and values. Ralph and Simon kept order by leading the boys. They built shelters and fires to remain civilized. At the beginning of the novel, they had rules and concerns and acted like civilized people who had a sort of government feel. Ralph decided to choose a leader and every now and then they called meetings. Ralph always seemed the calmest, but as time went on he began to show his wild side towards Jack's group. At first, Jack would never think of killing a piglet, but he later discovers that he is the first to transform into a wild hunter. Society was taken away from them and so they lost their values ​​and innocent thoughts and started killing the other kids. Without knowing what evil was, none of them would have felt guilty for what had happened during their time on the island. There is a great struggle between the savage and civilization as the two groups of boys argue and try to live on their own until they are rescued. Similarly, the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, reinforces the fact that there is evil and good in people. . Grendel had both the characteristics of a human being and a monster. He behaves like a child and has the heart of one, yes... middle of paper... a small event could change someone and his bad side will automatically emerge within him. Dick experienced internal conflicts within himself about being a black man and anything could strike at his inner anger. He started committing crimes and killing people in his city. The mystery of his past and why he shot people symbolize that evil is everywhere and nothing can stop it once it strikes. Dick's new personality shocked the boys to see how someone so nice and kind could turn out to be so uncivilized after all. No matter how pure and civilized someone seems, the "other" side exists eternally. Inevitably, all people must have a sense of right and wrong, angel and devil, to go through life and understand its meaning. Without knowing good, evil will not exist and vice versa. The quality of dual nature exists in human beings. Every piece of art will always have these points of view in the characters because it shows how people think. Although Jack and Grendel were perceived as evil characters, they both had a sense of purity. Everyone was created with two consciousnesses to learn through experience and observation.
