The media in America rushes to the scene of violent acts and reports to viewers all the information they can, whether it is factual or not. Once it's established that a firearm was used, everyone on both sides of the American gun debate starts adding their two cents. Before all the facts are known, questions begin to be answered. These questions are usually the same. Who did this? Why did they do this? How did they get the gun? What should we (America) do? What typically follows is a mixture of emotions and political agendas intended to ensure that “this never happens again.” Many times the wrong decision is made quickly. US legislators initiate campaigns fueled in some way by emotions, personal agenda, or perhaps job security. Amy Hetzner recommends that “lawmakers must also evaluate the effectiveness of legislation passed in the emotion of the moment,” which is supported by tragedies in society that spur debate over gun control. After the sickening tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, new gun laws were quickly passed.
