Topic > Indian Dowry and Marriage System - 1557

Why does “dowry” still exist in the world? The word “dowry” has a deep meaning that needs to be noted in this cruel society. Indian society is surrounded by many problems such as unemployment, population growth and terrorism. Among these problems, a challenging and horrible tradition is the dowry system. Dowry is the non-refundable money or property with which the groom or his family demands wealth from the bride at the wedding. Marriage is a religious and social event; exchanging property has become an institutionalized custom in India. Marriage is a contract of union between people of the opposite sex, also known as forming a couple or spouses. Many people are not informed about dowry. There are only few countries which have dowry system. Apart from India, there are other countries that have common practices, such as Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan. Apart from the strong Indian rituals and customs, there are some misfortunes that women suffer due to discrimination from society regarding marriage and dowry, such as poor education, lack of law enforcement and few social freedoms . Only some parts of India have freedom. In underdeveloped cities, women's rights are few. Traditionally, marriages are arranged by parents. Women cannot choose their life partner. A bride's desirability is based on her suitability as a "housewife" and wife. In some middle-class families, if the bride's family is unable to provide an abnormal dowry, they marry off the young daughter to an unworthy man (elderly or disabled) who does not ask for dowry (Nirmi 2). Because of the religious aspect, the girl's family is afraid of losing respect for their children....... middle of paper...... and especially men will not do anything. It is to their advantage when women are unaware, scared and weak. With education, women will have no problem revealing their deserved status. The Indian police and courts should enforce strict law to circumvent this system and create a better life for women, but it is up to them, the women, to truly defend their rights. If we don't do this, many families and relationships will fall apart. Life isn't fair, but men and women should have the same opportunities to live their lives. Indian society should strive to ban the cruel dowry system because it is based on cruelty and hatred and kills women. Therefore, we should spread the word to ban the dowry system everywhere to keep all families together so that we can respect everyone equally. A woman who respects herself is the key which can only be achieved with education.
