History The Black Forest area was inhabited in pre-colonial times by numerous native Indian tribes such as the Ute and Comanche. With vegetation such as Ponderosa pines providing fuel and building materials, and corn and wheat crops used for multi-tools and cooking items, the various indigenous groups were well adapted to their surrounding location. White settlers began inhabiting the area in earnest around the mid-1800s and eventually became the dominant group in the range around 1860. This eventually led to the perpetual settlement and commercialization of the area which later became known for lumber , livestock and farming, farming and potatoes.
