The magazine article talks about the challenges single-parent families face, such as emotional problems, housing stress, and financial stress. It generated different views from different literatures and suggested an approach to meet the needs of single parents. There is no doubt that both children and parents from single-parent families would have more or less emotional, personality and interpersonal problems. This reflective paper does not aim to go further in exploring the above symptoms and their impacts in their lives or society. Instead, I would like to go further and modify what single parents should know and highlight some ideas about what families, schools and our society could do to assist those families. Single parents are defined as mothers or fathers who are widowed, divorced, or separated, who take on the responsibility of raising one or more children under 18 in the same household. According to statistical data provided by the Department of Census and Statistics, it shows that the total number of single-parent families increased from 34,538 in 1991 to 72,326 in 2006. This means an annual increase of 2,500 families. And the report predicts an increasing trend in the future. So, we need to pay attention to this situation and government policies should be adjusted accordingly. So, what could single parents do to keep their children in a relatively better environment? Strategies and Other Tips First, single parents should be aware of their emotions and problem perspective. They usually complain and fear responsibilities, they can easily fall into pessimism and be unwilling to bear the uncertain risk of life. In short, our society should not discriminate or give them a negative label. We should not ignore the importance of cooperation between family, school and our society.
