“Revenge is a dish best served cold.” This famous saying is an ancient proverb that has been carried forward for centuries. The phrase describes that the best reimbursement is that which comes from planning; revenge is bringing the most horrendous pain to your enemies when they least expect it. In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet discovers that his uncle, Claudius, has poisoned his father, the late King Hamlet, to steal his crown. Not only did his uncle usurp his father's throne, but he also married Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude. After meeting a ghost who claimed to be his father, Hamlet is tasked by the ghost with taking revenge on his uncle. Hamlet is furious with cases involving: murder, incest, betrayal and deceit, which is quick to carry out his orders. Revenge is a dominant theme depicted throughout Hamlet, affecting trust between characters, resulting in falls and deaths. The tragedy Hamlet revolves around three main families. Each of the eldest sons of the family had one thing in common: they wanted to avenge their massacred father. Hamlet's main goal was to make his uncle suffer more than his father, so that his revenge would be complete. In Act 3, Scene 3, Hamlet had the perfect opportunity to kill Claudius, but due to Hamlet's religious beliefs, he hesitated. Since Claudius was praying, Hamlet decided to wait for the moment when Claudius was committing a sin to execute him. Hamlet believed that the action you were committing right before death would determine whether you would enter heaven or hell. He was not in favor of the idea of Claudius entering heaven, so he decided to kill, "when he is drunk in his sleep, or in his anger, or in the incestuous pleasure of... middle of paper..." .s him new ruler of Denmark before dying, and Fortinbras regains all of his father's lost land and becomes king of Denmark. Fortebraccio ends victoriously! Since the fathers of the three main families were all murdered, the eldest sons of these families all vowed revenge. But unfortunately, due to lack of intelligence and acting angry and clueless, two of the three children died. As a theme, revenge was present in all parts of the opera. It is ironic that Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet all died by the same sword. Revenge was the driving force of three of the main characters of the work, for two it led to ruin, for the other to greatness. Hamlet is a great example in reminding us not to seek revenge, because in the end it will only hurt us. Instead, the best revenge is to strive for your best and achieve success.
