A nation engaged in a barbaric war on its own land, President Abraham Lincoln made a trip to Gettysburg in November 1863 to speak about a military cemetery that would be placed on the land where it stood ; the cemetery was to be erected in memory of the soldiers who fought and died at the Battle of Gettysburg. Although it is merely two hundred and seventy-two words long, it remains one of the most exhilarating speeches ever given.
