Topic > Essay on Natural Disasters - 1971

The scope and level of impact of natural disasters on the world economy increased significantly in the first decade of the new century. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, humanity has been exposed to numerous natural disasters and catastrophes, such as earthquakes, floods, forest fires and hurricanes. The impact of natural disasters is increasing and their impact on the socioeconomic sphere is amplifying, so humanity is becoming more vulnerable to them. Thus, disasters become a source of new dangers, which often lead to disturbances in the functioning of dangerous objects, which, in turn, can lead to serious environmental disasters. This article is dedicated to discussing ecological disasters and their impact on the US economy and explains the reasons for natural disasters and which areas are extremely vulnerable to these changes. The United States, as a nation, has been experiencing natural disasters and catastrophes since it was found more than 200 years ago. During the 1980s and 1990s the country witnessed numerous economically devastating natural disasters, the impact of which is calculated not only in economic terms, but unfortunately in terms of human victims (National Academy of Sciences, 1999). These disasters and their economic and natural impacts have become an inevitable part of US history: the massive drought of 1998 in the central US, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and, subsequently, the 1994 Northridge California earthquake seemed to be the nation's three most costly and economically disastrous problems (National Academy of Sciences, 1999). There are also numerous examples of natural disasters that have occurred in the USA, such as the ice storm in the north-east of the United States,...... middle of paper......and vegetation cover, which obviously affects the occurrence of storms, hurricanes, floods, droughts and landslides. For example, the extent of damage caused by storm surges can be directly related to sea level fluctuations. For the United States, as a country bordered by seas and oceans, these facts are extremely important, because they should be taken into account when taking certain prevention measures. As floods and droughts continue, official government agencies say it is impossible to predict the long-term economic impact and extent of losses because no one can predict with certainty the severity of the disaster and its possible future effects. The only thing that is certain is that the losses include homes and buildings destroyed by hurricanes and tornadoes, the destruction of casinos and ports, the burning of millions of acres of farmland, and many more..
