Like Sofia I have an aunt who also covers the sofas in the living room, but not with plastic but with a cloth because she believes they will last longer. “but my things will last forever – and they will also stay brand new” (Canales 54). I believe this idea is somewhat of a Mexican tradition because I have been to Mexico several times and seen other women who also had their living room sofas covered with cloths. I always had it in my mind that they were covered because they had small children and didn't want them to get dirty just like Sofia's aunt "stops the red river from peering into the plastic covered carpet." (Canales, 57) or because they were torn and they wanted to cover them. Every time we go to my aunt's house I see her sofas covered in the same old fabric but she always says she reupholstered them so they could last longer. I remember when I was younger, in fifth grade, my mother also had a cloth in an old sofa, but the sofa was covered because we had a Shih Tzu, and the sofa was hers
