Topic > Essay on the Theme of the Death of Gilgamesh - 1565

During the course of Mosaics I, numerous books showing the theme of death were read. Many of these lyrics also displayed many other themes besides death. However, the theme of death is an interesting theme as it is displayed differently in many texts. Even though death can be seen as something bad or sad, it can mean so much more. The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Sons, The Trials of Socrates, The Holy Bible, and The Daodejing of Laozi are all texts that show the theme of death. Each of these texts expresses the theme of death in a contrasting way. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, death is inevitable for Gilgamesh. Since Gilgamesh is two-thirds god and one-third human, he is unable to achieve immortality because he is not fully god. The theme of death is a very important theme that is displayed in this epic poem. Gilgamesh is faced with the reality of death when his helper named Enkidu dies. The gods created Enkidu to be someone who would be stronger than Gilgamesh to be able to resist Gilgamesh. When Gilgamesh and Enkidu first meet, they fight each other to the ground. Once they forget their anger at each other, Gilgamesh announces that the two will form a friendship. Enkidu becomes Gilgamesh's companion, making journeys together. The relationship that Gilgamesh and Enkidu form continues throughout the novel, until Enkidu's death. “Hear me, ye young men, hear [me!] Hear me, ye elders [of teeming Uruk,] hear me! I will weep for Enkidu, my friend, like a bitterly paid mourner” (Epic of Gilgamesh 64). Enkidu's sudden death shocks Gilgamesh and fills him with grief. This is the first t...... middle of paper...... Everyone will face death sooner or later in their life, but some don't want to accept it. We should all live our lives with happiness, ignoring the thought of death because we should worry about the present and not what the future will bring us. In these five texts, the theme of death was visualized differently. In the Epic of Gilgamesh it was seen as a life lesson. In The Sons it was caused by the alienation of loved ones. In The Trial of Socrates it was expressed in a religious context. In the Holy Bible this was shown as a consequence, because the Israelites did not follow God's commandments. Finally, in Laozi's Daodejing it is explained that we cannot escape them. According to different people, death can have different meanings. These five texts present the theme of death very effectively because they give different views on the meaning.
